Who am I?

Lifelong Linux user. Started by borrowing SUSE install media from the local library in the 4th grade. Ran Ubuntu as a desktop full-time for 8th and 9th grade.

Experience on Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS and Arch systems over the years. Provided custom-compiled kernels for Ubuntu for a while, and ran a build bot to automatically build a nightly Arch package for a FOSS project I still use.

I started performing systems administration tasks somewhere around '09 or '10. I hosted different services for friends, then ran a LAMP stack for my own uses. Nowadays, I administer a couple of Debian boxes running a variety of software, such as:

  • PostgreSQL
  • Postfix
  • gogs
  • nginx
  • Dovecot
  • Syncthing

Over the years, I've had to learn quite a few tools to accomplish the things I've wanted to do. I picked up rudimentary HTML and CSS skills working on a homepage at the age of 12, and then I picked up rudimentary PHP skills to create a small web application for a small group of people. After that, I've moved over to the welcoming Python ecosystem (the website you're viewing is implemented with Pelican).

I've been running Arch exclusively on my laptop since about 2013. Haven't had a problem with an upgrade, and the package manager makes life a lot simpler. But I wouldn't run a server with it.

Decided to head back to school in 2014, and got a degree as an ICT technician. Learned the usual things one must learn: splicing fiber optic with a fusion splicer, installing the typical house wiring according to requirements...

But I also picked up an understanding for electronics there. First weeks were full of soldering thick copper wire to form cubes - to develop soldering skills. But after that we switched straight to designing circuit boards, and making them.

Over the next two years, I learnt all the basics one needs, from school and through independant study. Purpose of components, non-ideal properties, common circuits etc.
